Brash Higgins 2020 ‘SHZ’ Shiraz Estate-Organic

SHZ_label

Made from 21 year old shiraz vines grown at the Organic Brash Higgins estate Omensetter Vineyard. 2020 in the Vale was a very warm year with very low yields. Low rainfall during Winter set the scene for a tricky year ahead. Our proximity to the Gulf of St Vincent helped moderate the warm days and keep the grapes balanced and healthy. Vinted from hand selected fruit, the 2020 SHZ was comprised of 20% whole bunch fruit, and sent to open one ton fermenters for 3 weeks. Wild yeast did their job and then it all was gently basket pressed and sent to a mix of new and older French hogsheads for 20 months.

The Review:

“Dense dark fruit perfume, also iron-rich from the get-go. Rosemary, lavender, orange peel, five spice, umami, molasses type of sweet-salty aroma. Palate hits all the flavour tones–sweet, salty, bitter, sour, and it all works, all melted together. Bresaola and smoked meats. Finishes on a strong cocoa powder, dark chocolate note. Tannins are fine and build the backbone for the fruit and spice to come forth. This is almost 15% alcohol but the fruit intensity is so deep, you can’t feel it. It’s all serious and seriously well made too.” 94 pts, Kasia Sobiesiak, The Wine Front
