Brash Higgins 2023 ‘SHZ’ Shiraz Estate-Organic

SHZ23 front

Made from 25 year old shiraz vines grown at the Organic Brash Higgins’ estate Omensetter Vineyard. 2023 in the Vale was a cool year with some tricky growing conditions. Vinted from hand selected fruit, partially direct pressed, the 2023 SHZ was comprised of 20% whole bunch fruit, and sent to open two ton fermenters for 3 weeks. Wild yeast did their job and then it all was gently basket pressed and sent to a mix of 2-10 year older French hogsheads for 20 months.

‘Translucent purple. The nose of the Brash SHZ is brooding with black plums, bergamont, blood orange zest, nutmeg and liquorice. There’s an earthy note that is typical of Omensetter Vineyard’s red clay. The palate is generous, berried and vibrant, the tannins delicate. The wine finishes with dark berry and spice notes.’ – Brad Hickey, Vinitor, 9 Sept 2025.

Review:
2021 SHZ Shiraz Estate- “An address that does its very best to knock any obvious sweet fruit from its wines. A trait that I appreciate. Here, achieved with a synthesis of reduction, an attenuated natural ferment and a good douse of whole-bunch spice, with a wee dab of rusticity. Fine tannins, a gritty carapace lathered with spice, to boot. From organically grown grapes.” 93 pts, Ned Goodwin, MW, JamesSuckling.com
